As part of War On Screen 2018, 20 young people aged between 13 and 17, from priority neighbourhoods and neighbourhoods 'en veille active’ in Châlons-en-Champagne have made a short film in line with the festival’s theme.

Helped by professionals during the creative and distribution processes, they have discovered the language and techniques of the cinema.

These cinema workshops have built on the 2017 War on Screen festival programme and participation in a special effects workshop.

La Caravane Ensorcelée, the travelling cinema dedicated to short films, returns to War on Screen. The programme consists of free impromptu screenings of short films, selected from all periods and genres, that deal with different conflicts. Newsreels, animated film or fiction are used to highlight diverse perspectives on the battles, from behind the front lines, the soldiers… rather than focusing only on the fighting and its violence. Allow yourself a few minutes for a trip in this red and white cocoon.

Ciné Ligue organises screenings of both recent and vintage films in venues throughout the Champagne-Ardenne region where there are no cinemas.

Family films, children’s films and documentaries are selected for their quality, theme and modernity, and are open to all. Specific requests from local cinema correspondents are also taken into consideration.

The screenings take place in theatres, auditoriums, community centres and schools.

With the support of the Department for Education, the 'Cordées de la Réussite’ initiative promotes cultural democratisation in schools throughout France. On the Reims campus of Paris Sciences Po, the programme is coordinated by the student association “Pistes pour la Réussite”.

On Saturday 6th October 2018, 120 secondary-school pupils, sponsored by 40 student-tutors from Sciences Po-Campus de Reims and 8 academic advisors, will discover the festival.

With several different paths reflecting the various focuses of the festival programme on offer, they will also take part in other festival highlights: exhibition visits and encounters with the directors programmed the same day.

Supposing Dilili visited Châlons-en-Champagne at the Belle Époque? This workshop gives you the opportunity to make an Art Nouveau set using images of the facades of monuments in Châlons, taking inspiration from Dilili in Paris, the latest film by Michel Ocelot (creator of Kirikou) presented at War on Screen 2018.

First act, then film, then edit the film – that is what this workshop has in store for you! With the help of the activity leaders, you will make a short film on the subject of war. This will enable you to learn what cinema is all about. During this hands-on experience, you will get to grips with the cinematographic and narrative issues of a zoom, a close-up or a low-angle shot. Will the result be true to your original intention? You will find out at the end of the workshop during the screening of the film you just made.

Come and discover the Mash-Up! This creative practice consists of borrowing pre-existing pieces of work, mixing them up and giving them a new life and a new meaning. Whilst in the past films were made by the privileged few, today’s digital tools are making this artistic activity accessible to anyone. From now on, we no longer have to passively consume images made by others, we can use them to make “upcycled cinema”. During this workshop, mash-up films will be screened first, following which you can then create your own with the help and advice of the participating filmmaker.
