The first training period for recruits to the Canadian Army lasts for twelve weeks. Order and discipline are considered essential virtues, but not all the young soldiers have completely taken them on board yet. Nonstop, they fold T-shirts, memorise orders, practise marching and shooting. Jean-François Caissy explores the voluntary transition from civilian to military life. The recruits give a variety of reasons for their choice of career, with one reason mentioned more than the rest: the pursuit of a challenge.

Born in Quebec, Jean-François Caissy is a trained photographer, working as an independent filmmaker and visual artist. Following a promising debut in 2005 with Mating Season (La Saison des Amours), his second film Journey’s End (La Belle Visite) had its world première at the 60th Berlin Film Festival, earning him international recognition. In 2006 and 2007 he created videos for two theatre pieces and in 2018 was invited for a third time to the Berlinale with First Stripes (Premières Armes). |
