FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978
With Tadeusz Lomnicki, Jerzy Radziwilowicz, Krystyna Janda
Agnieszka, a young television director, attempts to trace a Stakhanovite from the 1950s, the bricklayer Birkut. She tries to understand how the media made him into a hero of the proletariat. As she discovers censured archive images and listens to the testimonies of his friends and ex-wife, a portrait of the man emerges: he believed in a workers revolution, and the building of houses for everyone. But Agnieszka has to confront her supervisor who doesn’t care for the subject of the film, and tries to hinder her project with the pretext that she is going over budget.
