Mrs Henderson is a widow and bored. She buys a theatre in the heart of Soho: the Windmill. With no knowledge as to how to run a venue, she calls on the talented Vivian Van Damm, an experienced artistic director and administrator. Their strong personalities soon clash, but this unusual and fiery relationship nevertheless pays dividends. Even better, they quickly shake up the timid conventions of British theatre.
