Born in Russia in 1920, Serguei Bondartchouk initially worked as an actor at the Eiski theatre in 1937 and 1938, before spending four years studying at the Rostov theatre school. He graduated from the National Cinema Institute (VGIK) in Moscow where he studied with S. Guerassimov. After beginning his career in cinema as an actor, in The Young Guard, he filmed Destiny of a Man. Since 1952 he has been officially a People’s Artist of the USSR. |
