During World War I, Marte Grangier, a young nurse betrothed to a soldier, falls in love with François Jaubert, a 17-year-old schoolboy. Openly living their love affair, the lovers scandalise their town. Their happiness ends when Jacques, her fiancé, returns home from the front line at the end of the war.
