In South Korea, Jin-tae, a shoe shiner, uses his modest resources to fund the education of his younger brother, Jin-suk. All the hopes of their family dramatically crumble on 25th June 1950 when war breaks out. Jin-suk is forcibly recruited and sent to the front line. Jin-tae tries in vain to intercede, and suffers the same fate. The two brothers join the Southern army, poorly equipped, undernourished, badly organised, harassed night and day by an enemy superior in numbers and in strength...
